I believe everyone has the same types of bacteria in their mouth, but some bacteria dominate over others. Some people have more cavity enhancing bacteria which means they will be more susceptible to tooth decay. Others will not have tooth decay problems, but will develop gum disease. And then some poor souls will get both...
Bad breath can be just from poor hygiene, which leaves the biodegrading food, similar to your trash can, to start producing an odor. If this habit continues over a long period of time...years, then the body has to try to fight back. The disease process is actually a defense mechanism against the bacteria. Bacteria cause acids, acids produce toxins and break-down, immune system kicks in and their battle produces the results of decaying tissue and infection.....this stinks. The treatment for gum disease can be a simple as a routine cleaning either every 3, 4 or 6 months. Or scaling under the gum tissues while the teeth are numb followed by 3-4 month maintenance cleanings.
The sinus can cause problems with bad breath too. If your sinuses are infected, that tissue is also decaying and the smell is very bad. Acid reflux can also cause a foul smell in the breath. Rotten food back-wash....that must smell bad...lol

I think you're referring to periodontal disease. It seems to be somewhat hereditary, being a function of the composition of the saliva. People who are prone to peridontal disease need to be very diligent about cleaning and flossing their teeth, and about having their teeth cleaned professionally. A professional dental hygienist can pick up the beginning signs of periodontal disease. Different dentists treat the situation differently. Among the possible treatments are antibiotics and cleaning out the deep pockets in the gums that are the result of this condition. Sometimes the gums must be treated surgically.

Do you floss? If not, make sure you floss at least 4-5 times a week. Trapped food between the teeth, especially in the back, where you can't really see it, can generate a smell if it's left back there too long. Also, make sure you are brushing your teeth long enough. I live in a dorm, and I noticed a lot of the girls on my floor only brush their teeth for like 20 seconds, which is NOT long enough. You should be spending at least 2 minutes on your teeth. And remember to drink lots of water (being dehydrated can cause bad breath), brush TWICE a day (morning and night), and brush your tongue! Hope this helps!!!!! :)

Well, for starters,

Brush your Tongue, that is a Central for bacteria,

next big one, is the roof of your mouth, also the secondary bacteria growing place.

Next, get those sides of the cheeks brushed, third bacteria growing place.

And remember to brush those gums well, or you could very well have gingivitis.

People can suffer halitosis, bad breath, without being aware they offend others. Go to the seat of the trouble! The saliva in our mouth has an antibody(IgA) and several digestive enzymes that help with food in our mouth. When a person sleeps, the mouth is closed for 6 to 8 hours, and the antibody(germ fighter) is alsleep and cannot treat or kill bacteria on our teeth or on our tongue. Each time and more when you brush your teeth, also brush the back of your tongue. Germs love the tongue, so brush. Dry mouths also can affect and dry our teeth. Try an experiment! Brush your teeth and tongue once or twice a day and use a good mouthwash that is not alcohol-based. Listerine contains about 23% alcohol. An excellent mouth wash, toothpaste is Biotene. There is no burning after a gargle, and the ingredients in Biotene fight the odor produced by bacteria. Actually, the acid on unbrushed teeth create bacteria and the odor is a by-product of the bacteria. Carry throat lozens or breathe spray to fight bad breath. Try it for a week or two and judge for yourself whether your breath is fresher.

Start with a major change in your diet to eliminate the heartburn!

Start brushing your teeth thoroughly after eating and before bed. Use a mouthwash like Listerine that kills germs that cause bad breath.

Start drinking more water. Eight glasses a day is recommended. Helps keep you hydrated and flushed out.

You might consider a visit to the doctor to have your sinus and tonsils checked. If you have a chronic sinus infection or ulcerated tonsils that will cause killer bad breath.

If these suggestions are not helpful, have your dentist check for decay.

It seems terribly rude for people to cover their noses while you are talking, but that is a good sign you need to take major steps!

Best wishes
