Smoking and Bad Breath

Everyone knows that smoking is bad for the health but it can also cause bad breath as well.  Smokers are the most likely to get halitosis for smoking works in many ways to create bad breath.  Not only does smoking cause bad breath, but it also makes the person who smokes smell badly.

The smell of smoke lingers on the clothing and for those who do not smoke, this can be quite unpleasant.  When coupled with the bad breath, a smoker is not a pleasant person to be around with all the bad smells.  The following are some of the reasons that smoking causes bad breath:

•    The tar and nicotine that are present in cigarettes are one of the reasons for smoker’s halitosis.  After a cigarette is smoked, the tar and nicotine from the cigarette stays on the teeth and tongue as well as the inside of the cheeks.  A build up of these chemicals is enough to create the bad breath that is associated with smoking.   The only way to remove this film is by brushing after every cigarette.  Brushing the teeth too frequently is not good for them and most people who smoke are not going to have access to tooth brush and tooth paste after every cigarette.  Mints can be a temporary solution for smokers who are concerned with halitosis.

•    Not only does smoking leave a stinky film on the inside of the mouth, but smoking slows down the production of saliva.  When saliva is not produced in a normal fashion, it can not work to remove bacteria.  These bacteria can also cause bad breath.  One way to help the mouth to produce more saliva is by chewing sugar free gum or sucking on a mint after smoking a cigarette.  Not only can this promote more saliva production, but it is also going to offer a temporary relief to the bad breath.  Make sure that the mints or gum is sugar free as sugar can also cause bad breath and is not going to help to get rid of it.

•    Finally, those who suffer from sinus problems and who smoke are going to have even more problems with halitosis.  This is because post nasal drip is one of the leading causes for bad breath.  When coupled with smoking, this is a recipe for disaster.  The temporary measures such as sugar free mints and gum described above may help to temporarily get rid of the bad breath, but these again are only temporary solutions.

The best way to get rid of bad breath from smoking is to quit smoking.  Those who have been thinking about quitting may take this fact and decide that their health and their breath are reason enough to quit.  If quitting is not on the agenda, then make sure to brush your teeth as recommended by your dentist and to floss with unflavored dental floss.  Stay away from sugary mints and gums that are only going to offer temporary relief for halitosis and that may actually help to make the breath smell even worse over the long run.
