Top Three Causes of Bad Breath

There are quite a few reasons why someone has bad breath.  Over twenty fiver percent of the people right now are suffering from this condition.  With this many people having bad breath; the market is full of ways to get rid of bad breath or the mask the smell of it.  Sugary mints, gums and mouthwashes pack the shelves and vie for supremacy in this area.  None of these are going to be very effective and can actually cause the halitosis to become worse.  Instead of looking at what is going to cure the bad breath that so many suffer from, it may be wise to look at what causes bad breath in order to get rid of it completely and not just mask it with expensive solutions.  The following are the top three causes of bad breath:

1.    Tooth Decay – Many people who do not visit the dentist are going to have problems with tooth decay.  This is a breeding ground for the bacteria that grows in the cavities and rotten teeth.  The only way to completely eradicate this type of halitosis is to get to the dentist and get the teeth pulled or capped.  The bad breath is going to be an issue until the teeth are repaired or removed.  Once this has happened, the bacteria are not going to have anywhere to grow and it is going to go back to the normal amount that is meant to occur naturally in the mouth.

2.    Smoking – Smokers have been known to have very bad breath and most think it is just because of the cigarette smoke itself.  Actually, smoking is one of the worst causes of bad breath not just because of the cigarettes, but because smoking dries out the mouth and inhibits the production of saliva.  Saliva is important as it clears away the bacteria in the mouth.  The nicotine and tar attaches to the inside of the mouth where the bacteria feed on it.  Since there is a halt in the saliva production, the bacteria can grow at alarming rates which makes the breath smell bad.

3.    Food – There are many different types of foods that are going to cause bad breath. Acidic foods such as citrus fruits are going to help in the aid of bacteria growth.  Dairy products also can help in the aid of bacteria growth and cause more of the sulfur bacteria which cause bad breath to grow.  Of course everyone knows that onions and garlic are great causes of halitosis, but it not because of their pungent smells.  The reason that they cause bad breath is because they contain the same sulfur bacteria that is found in the mouth and when they are consumed, they grow with the other bacteria already present in the mouth.

These are not the only reasons for bad breath, but they are some of the most common.  Alcohol and dry mouth can also cause bad breath.  In order to get rid of bad breath, it may be necessary to change some habits in order to make this happen.
