Myths about Bad Breath

It is not uncommon to have dinner and then know that your breath stinks from all the garlic in your fettuccini.  Everyone who has ever eaten garlic or onion knows that they have to brush their teeth to get rid of the bad odor.  If this seemed to be an issue even when you have not eaten garlic, and now it seems as though your breath smells bad with more consistency, then you may have a more serious problem called halitosis.  This is simply a fancy name for chronic bad breath.  There are many wives tales as to why people have bad breath and how to get rid of it.  Bad breath is nothing new and people have been fighting it since dental health became an issue. The follow are some of the most common myths about bad breath:

•    The most common misconception about bad breath is that you are going to be able to smell it yourself.  Everyone has put their hand in front of their mouth and tried to blow so that they could smell their breath.  The fact is that it does not work this way.  There are ways to tell if you have bad breath, the most common one is to lick your hand and smell it when the saliva has dried.  You can also simply ask someone if your breath smells bad.  After all, they are going to be the ones who have to smell it so they are going to be honest.

•    There are people who carry around mini bottles of mouthwash to keep their breath fresh.  Or at least they think it is going to keep their mouth clean.  The fact is that most commercial mouthwashes contain alcohol which is going to dry out the mouth.  When the mouth is dehydrated, the sulfur bacteria are going to multiply which is what causes bad breath in the first place.  So, put plainly, mouthwash makes the mouth taste good for a moment, but it is going to cause the breath to smell even worse shortly thereafter.

•    It is commonly thought that brushing and flossing is going to get rid of bad breath.  While it is important to maintain good dental hygiene, the teeth must be cleaned properly and the tongue should be scraped as well.  Without scraping the tongue, all the brushing and flossing in the world is not going to get rid of bad breath.  The entire mouth needs to be cleaned properly in order for all of the bacteria that cause bad breath to be removed.

These are only a few of the myths that are related to bad breath.  There are others that are not so common like stomach problems can lead to bad breath.  While there is some truth to that, it is not always going to be the case.  There are many different things that truly can cause bad breath but the above myths should be left behind and new ways to combat halitosis should be found.
