Do You Have Bad Breath?

When someone has dirty hands, they can just look at them and know that they are dirty and need to be washed.  When one has been working out or working hard all day, the body emits an odor that can be smelled by the person themselves in most cases.  When the outer body needs to be cleaned and maintained there is some sign of it that is noticeable by the person in question.

The same can not be said about bad breath.  The person who has bad breath is not typically going to be able to smell their own breath.  They are only going to know if someone takes it upon themselves to tell them.  This can be tricky as it is not easy to let a loved one or friend know that they have bad breath.

If you are curious to know if you suffer from halitosis that your friends have not had the heart to tell you about, you can do a few simple tests to find out for sure.  These tests do not take much time nor do they take much money to conduct.  They can also be done at anytime, such as after a meal where the teeth can not be brushed or cleaned properly.  If you want to know how your breath smells at any time of the day or night, the following tests can offer you some insight in to the health of your mouth:

•    One of the easiest tests to do to check for bad breath is to wash your hands well and dry them.  Then lick the back of your hand with your tongue and then allow the saliva to dry on the hand.  Then smell the spot where you licked your hand.  Does it smell bad?  If it does, imagine this being concentrated into your face while you are talking.  Would you want to smell that?  If you answer no, then you have bad breath and you may want to clean your mouth with a sprig of parsley or eat an apple to freshen your breath.

•    Another easy test is to take a piece of unscented, unflavored dental floss and run it through your teeth.  Again, smell the floss.  Does it smell bad?  If it does, then you have bad breath and should do something about it.  If it does not smell bad, then you are not suffering from bad breath and no one is going to be offended by it.  Keeping dental floss on you is a good idea for a quick clean after meals anyway and you then use it to check your breath.

•    Finally, take a cotton swab and wipe your tongue with it.  Run it over the tongue for a few minutes to get it nice and moist.  If the cotton swab smells, then again you have an issue with bad breath.  Conversely, if the swab is tinted or completely colored yellow, there may be another underlying condition that is causing the sulfur bacteria to increase in production which is the reason for the bad breath.  This may require more than some of the home remedies to get rid of and a dentist’s advice should be sought out.
