Bad Breath and Sinus Problems

It is common for people to think that bad breath is simply due to a lack of properly taking care of the mouth by brushing and flossing the teeth.  This is simply not true as even those who brush regularly can have problems with halitosis.  Many times the problem is that there is a medical condition that is causing the bad breath. Those who have sinus problems such as post nasal drip are going to have bad breath due to this medical condition.

Sinus problems are one of the most common reasons for people to have bad breath which can be quite embarrassing.  Those who have sinus problems are going to want to go to their doctor and get some help with them.  If they have not been to the doctor yet, they should go as soon as possible.  Not only to get rid of the bad breath, but to be healthier all around.

Some of the ways that sinus problems affect the breath are:

•    The mucus from the sinuses can be trapped at the back of the throat where the tongue begins where the bacteria there is going to feed off of it.  This creates more of the bacteria of sulfur which is what causes the bad breath.  In order to keep the breath smelling fresher, this drip and collection of mucus must be stopped.  There is not brushing of the tongue that is going to offer any respite to this type of halitosis.

•    When the sinuses become inflamed more bacteria is also created.  The sinus membranes are going to swell up and this can trap even more mucus which in turn is going to feed the bacteria which again, creates even worse breath.  Antibiotics are used to treat the inflamed or infected sinus cavities which are then going to open up and work normally again.  Until this happens, it is important to express as much of the mucus as possible by blowing the nose.  Getting rid of the mucus this way is going to give the bacteria less to feed on which is going to keep the bad breath to a lesser level.

When someone is having issues with their sinuses, they should seek the advice of a physician as soon as possible in order to get the issue resolved.  There are home remedies for bad breath that can offer aid until the sinuses are healed again.  Eating apples is not only good for the body; they are good for the breath as well.  Stay away from highly acidic foods such as oranges, pineapples and other citrus fruits.  They are only going to increase the amount of sulfur bacteria and make the breath even worse.

Chewing on parsley is also a great way to get rid of halitosis that is caused by sinus problems along with brushing the teeth with baking soda and water.  All of these are temporary measures and unless the sinuses are taken care of, the bad breath is not going to go completely away.
